Burning Mouth Syndrome

I have created this blog as a forum for exchanging comments, information and resources for people suffering from Burning Mouth Syndrome. If anyone has received help for this condition, I would like to hear about it. And I'd like to start sharing recipes that those of us with BMS can eat -- soft, mild foods that taste good!

Milestone

I haven't posted lately because not much has changed, but lately I've noticed that my mouth is getting gradually better. The other night I was able to eat enough hot sauce to make my nose run! I consider this a breakthrough.

Hi Angela, I have suffered with BMS for almost ten years now. Within the last few months, my Doctor has me taking Nexium for acid reflux and I have found great improvement in the burning tongue. Pretty much gone!
I know you talk about hot peppers and I have read that hot peppers are a short term cure for acid reflux. I just wondered if you suffer from acid reflux and if you have been on any meds for that. It has certainly helped my tongue.

I have had GI problems but it has never been diagnosed as acid reflux or anything else, for that matter. Mostly gas and bloating. I have had a feeling that it is somehow connected, though. It started about a year after my BMS started. I can't remember what drugs I tried, but I'm pretty sure Nexium wasn't one of them. Nothing ever worked.

Thank you for this blog it's full of a lot of great information. I began having symptoms of BMS a few years back since it started I have progressively become less able to tolerate certain foods, beverages, etc. Until just recently I attributed it to getting older; I believed that I just couldn't handle spicy food anymore. I finally did some research and found out that deficiency in folic acid can cause BMS, I also found that proton pump inhibitors such as Omeprazole (which I have been taking for GERD for several years now) interfere with absorption of folic acid. I currently take a multivitamin with folic acid I plan to add an additional folic acid supplement in the hopes that it will help reverse the problem. I have also learned that alpha lipoic acid is helpful in treating BMS as well, here is a link to information on it, http://altmedicine.about.com/od/alphalipoicacid/a/alphalipoicacid.htm
